In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Congress candidate Madan Lal Sharma with a significant margin of over 257,000 votes. His victory margin increased to approximately 302,000 votes in the 2019 elections, where he again faced Raman Bhalla from Congress
Before his tenure in the Lok Sabha, he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Nagrota constituency from 2002 to 2014. During this period, he held the position of BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit president
