Early Life and Education
Dharmendra Pradhan was born on June 26, 1969, in Talcher, Angul district, Odisha. His father, Dr. Debendra Pradhan, was a notable politician and former MP. He pursued his higher education at Utkal University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Anthropology. Pradhan’s early involvement in politics began during his college years when he became active in student movements, leading to his presidency of the Talcher College Students’ Union in 1985.
Political Career
Pradhan’s political journey began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP. He served as the national secretary of ABVP in 1995 and later as the president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha from 2006 to 2010. His formal entry into politics at the national level came in 2004 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Deogarh constituency. Although he faced a setback in the following election, he made a comeback in 2012 by winning a Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar.
Throughout his career, Pradhan has held several important positions:
- Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas (2014-present)
- Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (2017-present)
- Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) for Madhya Pradesh since 2018.
