Haji SK Nurul Islam was a prominent Indian politician affiliated with the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), representing the Basirhat constituency in West Bengal. He passed away on September 25, 2024, after a prolonged battle with liver cancer, leaving a significant impact on his community and political landscape.
Born on July 14, 1963, Nurul Islam joined the Trinamool Congress shortly after its formation in January 1998. His political career began with local governance, serving as a member of the Bahera Gram Panchayat Samiti from 2003 to 2008. He then became a member of the North 24 Parganas District Council
His breakthrough came in 2009 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Basirhat. Although he faced challenges in subsequent elections, including a defeat in 2014 when the constituency was altered to Jangipur, he made a comeback in 2016 by winning a seat as an MLA from Haroa, North 24 Parganas. He continued to serve in this capacity until his recent election victory in 2024, where he reclaimed his position in the Lok Sabha.
Islam was known for his commitment to social work, particularly in the remote Sundarbans region, focusing on the upliftment of impoverished communities. His leadership was recognized by various political figures, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who expressed her condolences and highlighted his dedication to social issues
His passing is seen as a significant loss for the people of Basirhat and the TMC party
