Shri Phani Bhusan Choudhury

Shri Phani Bhusan Choudhury is a prominent political figure associated with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and has made significant contributions to Assam’s political landscape. Born in 1952 in Bakharapara, Bongaigaon, he comes from a family with a legacy in public service, being the son of Late Ramesh Chandra Choudhury. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Arya Vidyapeeth College, which he completed in 1973​.​

Choudhury’s political journey began in 1985 when he first contested in the Assam Legislative Assembly elections. Over the years, he has achieved remarkable success, securing seven consecutive wins from the Bongaigaon Assembly constituency. Initially, he was elected twice as an Independent candidate and subsequently five times representing the AGP​

He served as a cabinet minister for various departments, including Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs from 2018 to 2021, and has been involved in multiple committees within the Assam Legislative Assembly​.

In 2024, he was elected to the Lok Sabha as the MP for Barpeta, marking a historic eighth term as an MLA before resigning from that position​

His work has included significant projects aimed at improving the lives of the poor in his constituency, such as the SETU project​.

Despite his successes, he has faced challenges, including a pending criminal case related to allegations of criminal conspiracy and cheating​

As of now, he focuses on representing Barpeta in the Lok Sabha, aiming to leverage his extensive political experience to benefit the region.
