Jyotsna Mahant was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Korba constituency in Chhattisgarh during the 2019 Indian general elections. She secured her position by defeating Saroj Pandey, the BJP’s national general secretary, by a significant margin of over 41,000 votes

Her victory was particularly notable as it was the only seat won by the Congress party in the Hasdeo protest region, highlighting her strong support for local environmental causes(

Her political career has been marked by her focus on community issues, especially concerning the Hasdeo protests, which center around local opposition to proposed coal mining projects. These projects have raised serious concerns about ecological impact, displacement of local communities, and disruption of traditional lifestyles

Jyotsna Mahant’s election victory represents not only a continuation of the Mahant family’s political legacy in Korba but also a broader mandate reflecting local sentiments against environmental degradation.
