Dr. T. Sumathy

Dr. T. Sumathy, commonly known as Thamizhachi Thangapandian, is an accomplished Indian politician, poet, writer, academic, and cultural activist. She is affiliated with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Chennai South constituency. Thamizhachi was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha in 2019.

Born into a family deeply rooted in Tamil culture and politics, Thamizhachi’s father, V. Thangapandian, was a prominent DMK leader. Her contributions span multiple fields, including literature, where she has published collections of poetry, short stories, and essays. Notable works include Avalukku Veyil Endru Peyar (a collection of poems), Muttu Veedu (short stories), and Internal Colloquies, an English translation of her Tamil poetry.

In addition to her literary accomplishments, she has also worked as a lyricist and dialogue writer in Tamil cinema, contributing to films like Pisaasu and Paris Paris.

As a politician, Thamizhachi is known for her advocacy of gender rights, LGBTQIA+ issues, and social justice. She has been vocal about institutional violence, particularly concerning marginalized communities, and has spoken out on issues of caste and educational inequities. She is also a strong advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights in Tamil Nadu, contributing to the state’s progressive policies, including the creation of a Transgender Welfare Board.
